I meant to post a daily december thing but as you do, I was thinking about the Phoenix adaptation that's going to be on d+ and realized... they picked a fucking really weird one. I assume they're going to rewrite QUITE a lot of it but I kinda want to summarize the chapter they chose and just... why this one lmao. Also I really like phoenix and want to ruminate on it some more.

Obviously spoilers if anyone wants to read phoenix/see this movie, also the first half of this chapter is like, biblical style incest so, dldr.

The earth is dying. :( Everyone is leaving for space, and we start with a couple who buys a planet that sucks and is sold to them by a shifty space businessman. They're determined to make due, but because this planet sucks, the husband almost immediately dies, leaving his wife pregnant. She has the son and seals herself in a tomb that will keep her alive and young (I think the phoenix helps do this maybe?) and the son is raised by a robot. She wakes up, kills the robot because he thinks the robot is his mother, and then has sex with him (which was her intention all along, because she wants to populate this world.) She pops out several boys, and is distraught because she's worried she'll get old and not be able to have any more kids, and then child 1 is partially crushed with a boulder, on his bottom half.

So she is sealed in again, child 1 raises all their kids until they're old enough. She's woken up again and starts popping out more kids with the oldest boy, but once again they're all boys and she's like this is a curse!!! and the youngest boy decides to steal her away, cause he wants a go at her. The phoenix is like, jeez this place IS cursed, and flies off to another planet of shapeshifters (who showed up in chapter 2? of phoenix as well) and brings one over.

The youngest son does her instead, and they have several girls, but they all have these really cute like, butterfly antlers, and are blind. He's like here, have kids with these and they do, and a new human hybrid alien society is born! Woo! Yeah this is like half of the story.

The original lady who came is venerated as a queen and uses the rejuvenation chamber to stay alive. One of the little aliens comes into contact with her and finds out that she misses earth terribly, and realizes that he (? I think the alien is a boy I honestly don't remember) can move the ship the original shapeshifter came on, and decides to take her to earth. After this it's like, they go to another planet that's dying and pick up another alien, and they are docked by an earthling (who is also in another chapter of phoenix) who comes with them on the way to earth. They stop at several horrible planets that try to kill them, which is pretty fun and creative, and then finally make it to earth.

Of course, earth still sucks, and the earthling who docked has to smuggle them in. They're found out though, and earth security or whatever is like, no you gotta kill them or we'll kill you, and he's like, oh fine, and he goes and kills the lady and the little alien. It's sad. (Aside from that some other stuff happens like we see that the alien civilization also ends up dying too, because capitalism is invented.)

So it's like... weird. Very weird. I honestly don't know how you adapt this at all, being on d+ or for kids or whatever, people obviously aren't going to stand for the majority of this, no matter how it's handled lol. Even for Tezuka who definitely has a penchant for, uh, unorthodox romances this one is pretty wild. And also, phoenix is not for children in any way? and I know they have adult stuff on there too and I couldn't quite tell the tone they were going for, but this is like my general worry of like... because diz lost the ghibli license, are they going to go for tezuka stuff? I'd be so annoyed LOL. It's not like it's their studio making it or anything but you know, they fucking love to buy everything possible, I feel like it's a valid concern at this point.

at any rate, I guess you could adapt the second half into something interesting! a cute little space adventure except in the story like, none of it is cute and they're in a lot of peril. There's a planet where sentient rocks try to crush them. I like, really need to see this thing because I have no clue if they're going for like, a respectful close to the original material approach or if it's like... phoenix in name only lol.

i had no idea this adaptation was even happening.... you're right, even with the animation studio it's valid to be concerned about how disney might try to mangle the story. that said, it would be very funny if parents did set their kids down in front of this - like how my parents let me rent the angel sanctuary ova from blockbusters when i was 13 lol.
